Speaking

Book Phil to speak

Phil has stood in front of middle schoolers, college students, HR professionals and people in addiction treatment. The story is the one in The Black Sword: twenty years of drinking, 304 pounds, a son who cried at the doctor's office, and what Phil did that same day.

What he talks about

Addiction and the way out. Twenty years of alcohol and food addiction, three DUIs, jail, a shooting, and quitting drinking cold turkey. "You cannot heal in the same environment that's keeping you sick."

Starting before you feel ready. He walked into a gym crying and said "I need help" to a stranger. "You don't need to feel ready. You just need to decide that now's the time to change."

Small decisions. "If your life can fall apart one bad decision at a time, then it can also be rebuilt one good decision at a time."

Second chances. The five lessons he took from a jail cell to a bodybuilding stage, and why "you don't want to talk to your buddy at a bar who's on his fifth tequila."

No one is too far gone. The blind man, the amputee and the 71-year-old widow who walked into his gym, and what they did once they got there.
