Discipline Over Motivation

December 15, 2025 · 3 minutes

In a short episode, Phil talks about motivation, a word he hears every day from his clients. He argues that the champion mindset shows on the days you train when you do not want to, which takes discipline more than motivation. Early results such as dropped pounds become motivation, and reaching a goal still leaves the work of maintaining it, which is why fitness is a lifestyle.

00:00 Hi, welcome back to the Body by Phil podcast. This is Phil. Today I'd like to talk a little bit about something I hear every single day I'm in here when I'm training my clients. Things I deal with myself almost on a daily basis is the term motivation. We hear it all the time. Stay motivated. Keep motivated. Push yourself. I'm wearing a shirt right now says push your limits. Sometimes we wear our motivation to help us get going and get in the gym. Motivation is tricky. It's really easy to get up and to get out of bed and to sacrifice sleep

00:31 and get to the gym and train when we're feeling properly motivated and we have that go go go and we feel really good about our training. I think the real champion mindset, you know, is the days that you do those things, you get up and you go when you really don't want to. And I think it's on those days where it's not a a matter of motivation so much as it is a matter of discipline. And discipline will help you get the motivation, but you have to have the discipline to first get up and go and do

01:02 these hard things on the days that you're really not feeling like doing so. And that is tricky. That's very hard thing to do for a lot of people. One thing that keeps that discipline and that motivation in me is the result. Okay, say just for example, your goal, your ultimate goal is weight loss. You you've had some moderate success. you've you've dropped some pounds. That's the motivation. So, you no longer have to say, "Okay, I wonder if I can do this. I wonder if this does work." You've

01:32 already had some success with it. So, that's your motivation to to get out of bed, to get to the gym, to maybe sacrifice other things that you may have on your mind that you want to do. But you you got to keep your goal first. All right? Because once you you reach these goals, you feel so much better about yourself. And that again, it comes back to not so much the motivation as it is the discipline to continue to say to stay consistent with your fitness

02:03 journeys, whatever they may be. It could be shredding pounds. It could be gaining muscle or tone or just tightening up or just say you've reached a goal and you want to stay on it because we know that just reaching your goal doesn't mean the game is over. There's a maintenance factor once you've get you worked so hard you finally got to that goal. You have to keep it. You have to stay on target. So there's a motivation there. We could get into we could get to our goal and think, "Okay, I've made it. I'm done." That's not really the case. uh

02:33 once you get there, you have to maintain uh that certain goal, whatever that may be. This is why they call fitness a lifestyle and not some sort of fat or gimmick or flash in the pan. We don't just reach a goal and then, you know, game's over. Motivation. All right? It comes in the form of discipline. These disciplines create good positive habits. And once these habits are instilled in you, you'll find that drive and that motivation to keep pushing forward. Stay strong.
